This month for the Yoga Book Club we read Comfortable with Uncertainty: 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion by Pema Chodron. I found myself fascinated by each page of Comfortable with Uncertainty. It felt like I marked every page to reference later or build a yoga class around, and before I knew it the entire book was covered in underlining, and post-it notes.
What makes this book so accessible is that each of the 108 passages stand alone. If you open it up to one chapter you read two pages and are ‘like oh yeah I knew that’ or ‘why didn’t I look at it like that before’, or ‘wow I need to remember that’!
One of my favorite passages is Nowness, and the title says it all! Within this passage Chodron tells a story of a women searching to attain enlightenment. The woman attains enlightenment to find that she is always aware of now. The chapter ends with these lighthearted words of wisdom: “Mindfulness trains us to be awake and alive, fully curious, about now. The out breath is now, the in-breath is now, waking up from our fantasies is now, and even the fantasies are now. The more you can be completely now, the more you realize that you’re always standing int eh middle of a sacred circle. It’s no small affair, whether you’re brushing your teeth or cooling your food or wiping your bottom. Whatever you’re doing, you’re doing it now.” (Comfortable with Uncertainty, Nowness, pg 116).
This is a must read for any human, not just for Buddhists and yogis, but any person who wishes to live with compassion, joy, love and equanimity at all times. This little book can fit into your pocket, purse, or kindle. When you find yourself at a loss or uncertain pick up the book and let it fall open to a page and that page will be just the guidance you need at that moment.
