Life of Pi

In April we will be reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Life of Pi is a fascinating story about survival, belief, animal behavior, hope and hopelessness. Pi is a 16-year-old boy who is struggling to survive in a very tough environment. We follow his story through a seven month long journey over the Pacific Ocean, a boy and a tiger in a lifeboat.

Come enjoy interesting dialogue, inspiring people, and a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Wherever You Go, There You Are

February is a short month so the next Book Club in March. We will be reading Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn. This book goes deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake, and the importance of it bringing about a state of “mindfulness” and a condition of “being” rather than “doing”. Kabat-Zinn looks at meditation as a workout for your consciousness. The author presents meditation in ways that make meditation appealing and make learning meditation easy – but beware practicing it is not.

Come enjoy interesting dialogue, inspiring people, and a relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig is a novel that is meant to both entertain and enlighten. The narrator takes a cross-country motorcycle trip where the maintenance of the motorcycle becomes an illustration of how we can unify the cold, rational realm of technology with the warm, imaginative realm of artistry. Eastern philosophy is coupled with Western philosophy, reminding us to become one with the activities that we are pursuing, to engage fully, to see and appreciate all of the details…to be mindful and present when we are hiking, eating, or tightening the chain on a motorcycle.
